Igloo Pak's Snow Bandit is one of the six Siberians that have been rated superior-excellent in the two SEPP trials held to date. Four other males and one female have received this top evaluation. Bandit received this rating in the 1982 SEPP trials, and as a result was chosen by Dr. Charles Belford to run on the SEPP team during the 1983 season. Bandit was one of the dogs that lead that team.

 

At the 1983 SEPP trials, Bandit ran with 11 other dogs that passed the previous year's evaluation. Of those, 9 had run on the SEPP team. Bandit was rated the best of those 12 dogs by Richard Moulton, the evaluator. Moulton said, " I was very impressed with the team as a whole. I am sure I have made a few misstakes in the evaluation of this team, but I would be very happy and pleased to start the season with a group of dogs this good."

 

Born in the summer of 1980, Bandit and his litter had a bout with parvo. He was nursed back to health by Doc and Louise, going to Jerry at about 14 weeks old. " His training began at 5-6 months and his first race was at 7 months in the two-dog class where he finished first," Jerry recalls.

 

"The next year, he ran double lead on my five-dog team, which placed first in several big races and finished fifth overall among 50 teams in New England Sled Dog Club five-dog class," he said.

 

Among the races Bandit ran during that 1982 season was Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where the team placed 4th of 16 teams in five-dog class. The course was mostly field and lake trail with some woods, the temperature that Feb. 20-21 was in the 40s, the trail condition punchy and slushy. The team's time for the six-mile trail was 31:08 Saturday, 34:22 Sunday. The winning team belonging to Bob Schirone ran 26:44 and 29:19.

 

In september 1982, Bandit led Jerry's five-dog team to victory at the Canadian Specialty's race. Harris Dunlap said there that Bandit looked like a good dog.

 

After the SEPP team was disbanded in early March, Bandit ran lead for Jerry's team in one snow race, taking the team to a fourth place finish among 16 teams at Rangeley, Maine, on the weekend of March 12-13. Wet snow fell Saturday, while Sunday's temperatures were in the mid-30s. Heat times for Jerry's team on the five-mile trail were 17:26 Saturday and 17:31 Sunday. The winning team's heat times were 15:20 and 15:11.

 

"Bandit is an extremely eager dog and very excitable. He can overheat himself, so is the last to be hooked into the team," Jerry said. " He has one of the best attitudes about running I've seen. The best of my dogs certainly. He just wants to go. When I say 'pick it up,' you can see him going into another gear. I wish I had five more like him."
